Managing the layers of an InDesign file is essential. By organizing these files’ structure, you will be reducing confusion for preflight instructions. In the design phase of a project, you will be able to rapidly alert your designs. Here are a few tips for organizing layers.

Name the layer based on what it is; in the below example, the waterfall layer contains all the elements with that feature.

Organize the artwork based on features. In the example, perhaps the client wanted a different background color. This request could be accomplished very quickly because all background elements will be in one layer.

Rearrange the layers’ stacking order based on which elements should be on top. In the example, the text layer is before the landscape layer. The guitar layer is on top of the pinata layer.
